SUMMARY:

This dissertation has as object of study the intellectual production of the historian Rodrigo
Octávio, highlighting his contributions to the construction of the republican history of Brazil
and his approach in relation to the Pan-American space. The research aims to understand how
his works influenced the historiography of the early twentieth century and its relevance to the
understanding of Brazilian foreign policy. The objectives of this study are to analyze Rodrigo
Octávio's first works in relation to the republican position and his relationship with the IHGB,
to understand his approach to the Pan-American space and the influence of the National
History Congresses, and to investigate the construction of the work "Alexandre de Gusmão e
o Monroísmo" as a junction of his studies on the subject. The sources used include the works
of Rodrigo Octávio, the conferences documented in the IHGB magazine, as well as texts by
other authors who discuss Brazilian foreign policy and Pan-Americanism. The methodology
used in this dissertation is analytical and interpretative, using content analysis of Rodrigo
Octávio's works and secondary sources to identify his main approaches and contributions to
the historiography of the period. The research aims to demonstrate how the early works of
Rodrigo Octávio reveal the organization of the historical narrative in the early twentieth
century and the relationship between the IHGB and the new republican government. In
addition, his unique approach to the Pan-American space stands out, focusing on a more
Brazilian or American perspective, which differentiates him from other intellectuals of the
time. Finally, it is intended to point out the relevance of Rodrigo Octávio's work in the
construction of republican history in Brazil and in the formulation of pro-republican
narratives. His work represents an important intellectual collection that influenced the
historiography of the period, paving the way for the understanding of Brazilian foreign policy
and its relationship with Pan-Americanism. In summary, this dissertation contributes to the
understanding of Rodrigo Octávio's intellectual production and his role in Brazilian
historiography, highlighting his importance for understanding the republican history of Brazil
and his unique approach in relation to the Pan-American space.
