SUMMARY:

This dissertation aims to understand the uses of the past in the construction of the place in theof Rio Grande Norte from the writings of the intellectual from Pernambuco and foundingpartner of the IHGRN, Vicente de Lemos, from 1907 to 1912. This selection is justified bythe writings of the intellectual: the first refers to the publication of the Papéis Velhos column;the second concerns the year of printing of the author's only book, entitled Capitães-mores eGovernadores do Rio Grande do Norte. The act of turning over old papers at the beginning ofthe 20th century was far from being a disinterested activity. The Question of Grossos wouldhave been the trigger for the systematized document search in the state of Rio Grande doNorte. Thus, in the face of such an undertaking, when going through the archives and pagingthe dusty documentation, Lemos not only selected the documents that were interesting for thestory, but also defined, together with the dominant group, Albuquerque Maranhão, whichstory should be told. Through writing, the illustrated meant the state space, through the use ofhistory, attributing meaning and value to it, transforming it into a place. In this way, thescholar also contributed to fostering a vision of the past and a project for the future. Thus, tobetter understand this intellectual, this work focuses on his sociability, on his work as ahistorian and politician. In order to understand how the scholar's historiography helped him tomanage the place in the north of Rio Grande, this research is dedicated to analyzing hiswritings, identifying the characters, the facts, that is, the version of the past that he intended totell. With regard to the methodology, it was carried out through documental survey, tabulationand qualitative, quantitative and evidence analysis of newspapers, magazines, books, Reportsof President of Province and Governors, almanacs and other texts.
