SUMMARY:

The idea that the neighborhood of Ribeira, Natal/RN, has fallen into decay is so commom that it comes up with a certain “naturalness” and often one does not try to problematize its meaning or know its historicity. In this sense, this researc aims to identify the emergence of the image of decadence associated with Ribeira in the second half of the 20th century from the analysis pf memorial texts (1970-1980) and local newspaper (1950). It seeks to understand which and how the construction of the meanings of the neighborhood took place, wich became central to a certain type of its entanglement in the urban trajectory in historical time. The analyzes developed in this research are based on the concept of representation, as postulated by Roger Chartier (2002) and Sandra Jatahy Pesavento (1994, 1999, 2007, 2008); the notions of experience (Yi-Fu Tuan, 2006; 2013) and attachment to place (Edward Relph, 1997), as well as reflections on media in modernity develope by John B. Thompson (2013). The research highlights the memory of the Ribeira neigborhood as a determinant of images, concepts and discourses, present and active today, on how to understand the cartography of the city of Natal, wich associates some of its neighborhoods with an outdated past. It is evident that the construction of the decadent image of Ribeira is based on political, economic and social issues, with the apropriation of space by the popular being a basic element of this process.
