SUMMARY:

ABSTRACT: This work aims to historicize the composition of new soundscapes in the high Sertão of Paraíba, particularly through the musical hybridisms undertaken by the band Tocaia da Paraíba, between the years 1995 and 2010. To this end, it is understood that the group is the fruit of a complex underground music scene formed in the city of Cajazeiras (Paraíba) in the late 1980s, which had its initial lines and contours established by the first sounds produced by the band Conspiração Apocalipse. In this rhythm, as a branch of this local musical culture, the band Tocaia da Paraíba became one of the main exponents of the Paraíba musical circuit, during the decades of 1990 and 2000, standing out mainly for two reasons: firstly, for the hybrid structure of its sound which, inaugurated in the middle of the high Sertão of Paraíba, brought to its cultural practices new musical references from Rock 'n' Roll to the Pífano bands, from Jazz to Coco de Roda, from Samba to Forró, uniting the local sphere to the global and leading the group to compose authorial songs that tensioned the stony traditionalist conceptions of northeastern musicality, particularly that of the sound space of the Paraíba sertão; Next, by the great notoriety conquered in the musical events in which they participated, which spread throughout practically all regions of the national territory, as well as by the appearance in journalistic articles in prominent means of the national press. In view of this theme, the present historical analysis seeks to understand the cultural work that this cajazeirense group proposed based on its artistic conceptions and the configuration of a hybrid soundscape, marked by a posture of alternation to mainstream music. As sources, we use the songs included in the albums Tocaia (2000) and Botando pra quebrar (2005), as well as periodicals that reported on the group (such as Folha de São Paulo, Tribuna da Imprensa, and Gazeta do Alto Piranhas), blogs, websites, physical dissemination materials (pamphlets and concert posters), photographic records, audiovisual recordings, and interviews - both with members of Tocaia and other groups of the local alternative scene. In relation to the theoretical basis, it is carried out from the operationalization of the concepts of soundscape, edified by Murray Schafer (2011a; 2011b) and Tim Ingold (2015); popular song, amplified by Marcos Napolitano (2002), José Geraldo Vinci de Moraes (2000), Adalberto Paranhos (2004) and Luiz Tatit (2012); Rock 'n' Roll, instrumentalized by Paulo Chacon (1982) and Elton John da Silva Farias (2013); and cultural hybridism, enabled by Nestor Canclini (2019) and Peter Burke (2003).
