SUMMARY:

This dissertation aims to understand the construction of the place of Rio Grande do Norte from the writings of the intellectual from Pernambuco and founding partner of the IHGRN, Vicente de Lemos, from 1907 to 1912. This clipping publication of the column Papéis Velhos and the final milestone was the printing year of the only book he wrote entitled Capitães- mores e Governadores do Rio Grande do Norte. Turning over old papers in the early 20th century was far from a disinterested activity. The Grossos Question would have been the trigger for the systematic documentary search in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. Thus, in the face of such an undertaking, when going through the archives and leafing through the dusty documentation, Lemos not only selected the documents that were of interest to the story, but also defined, together with the dominant group, Albuquerque Maranhão, which story should be told. Through his writing, the illustrated also meant the space of the State throughout history, endowing it with meaning and value, transforming it into a place. In this way, it also contributed to fostering a vision of the past and a project for the future. Thus, to better understand this intellectual, this work focuses on his sociability, acting as a historian and politician. In order to understand how his historiography helped to gestate the place in Rio Grande do Norte, this research is dedicated to analyzing his writings, identifying the characters, the facts, that is, the version of the past that he intended to tell. As for the methodology, it was carried out through documental survey, tabulation and qualitative, quantitative and evidentiary analysis of newspapers, magazines, books, Reports of Presidents of Provinces and Governors, almanacs and others.
