This work aims to understand the evolution of the dance of São Gonçalo de Lisieux -, in the State of Ceará, between 1963 and 1990. Starting from the idea that this dance had a traditional dimension, guided by orality. An ethnic group, whose members were black people, in a social space that was linked to ways of life and agrarian work. This study seeks to understand how the context of local modernity, marked by the institutionalization of the administration of schooling, had some effect on the historical reproduction of dance. To carry out this work, we sought to analyze oral sources, in the form of interviews with older residents of the locality, as well as school and church documentation. This understanding came through the collaborators' memories and narratives about the object studied. In this work, I present the São Gonçalo dance in Lisieux from the main objective: to analyze how the process of constitution of the São Gonçalo dance in Lisieux took place, and its social, historical, cultural and religious manifestations. For this purpose, they were discussed and based on concepts that contributed to the understanding of the roles of contributors in the construction and appreciation of the local culture. With a qualitative participatory and descriptive approach that sought to interpret the narratives, opinions and expectations of these subjects in relation to dance and around what they know and experience about the research space, it is classified; also, as an ethnographic, as I investigate dancers of the dance of São Gonçalo, to learn their stories and experiences in the place where they live. With the results of the field activity, it will be possible to identify the form of dance presented in Lisieux, based on oral history. As a theoretical support to base the discussions on an approach to the history of dance and the honored Saint, which made it possible to understand the social historical context and the arrival of this folkloric and cultural manifestation. I consider that the dance of São Gonçalo, in Lisieux, begins its presentation with the arrival of the Polongo family in 1963, making a possible historical correlation with the neighboring places, demonstrating, according to the analyzes carried out on the possibility of the form to dance coming from some community, around Lisieux.
