SUMMARY:

Based on the first three literary works written by Francisco José Costa Dantas, respectively Coivara da Memória (1991), Os Desvalidos (1993) and Cartilha do Silêncio (1997), this work analyzes the construction of a literary space that represents the state of Sergipe between 1900 and 1950. Dantas' narratives recreate this Sergipe of the past through his sentences and imagination, the latter moved by experiences and memories. Therefore, I try to examine what are the aspects that make up this place of the past forged by creativity, experiences and words. In view of this objective, I will investigate how Francisco Dantas constructed his identity as an author and intellectual in Sergipe, as well as analyzing his repercussions as a writer on the national and local scene. Then, I will investigate how much Francisco Dantas articulates his personal and family experiences in the production of his literature, recreating spaces from his youth. As well, I will problematize the action of the characters in Sergipe society recreated by the author, examining the social tensions, and comparing these men and women made by sentences to those that belonged to Francisco Dantas' lived experience. In this way, I also seek to understand how the author mobilizes regionalism in his literature, to build this northeastern spatial cutout, full of nostalgia and traditional regionalist topics. From the analysis of such elements, it will be possible to study how Francisco Dantas forged his literary Sergipe as a creative representation of the space belonging to the lived experience.
