SUMMARY:

This thesis has as its object the trajectories and deeds of subjects who acted in the main conflicts that occurred in the second half of the 17th century in the Northern Captaincies, namely: the wars against the mocambos dos Palmares and the wars of conquest of the hinterlands against the indigenous, the called the War of the Barbarians. The objective is to analyze the process of territorialization of the colonial region understood as Northern Captaincies through the actions of conquest, the participation and interest of institutions of the royal power in Portuguese America and of the individuals involved in the war actions. The analysis is based on concepts specific to studies of the colonial period in Portuguese America, such as territory, jurisdiction, border and merces economy. To this end, it starts with the analysis of documents from the period, such as patents and appointments for military posts, letters granting sesmarias grants and correspondence between colonial authorities. They are documents in which the action of institutions and the movement of men in space are evidenced.
