SUMMARY:

This work intends to deal with the problem of the uses of the past for the present. To this end, it focuses on the sacred spaces devoted to the Martyrs of Cunhaú and Uruaçu, or Protomártires do Brasil, more specifically, tangent to the three sanctuaries, centers of religious function, created by the Archdiocese of Natal in Canguaretama, São Gonçalo do Amarante and Natal, municipalities of Rio Grande do Norte. The aim is to investigate the elements recaptured and managed by the Church, its faithful and collaborators with a view to the composition of the sanctuaries, in the space of 29 years (1988 to 2017), in which beatification, canonization of actors and subjects who suffered martyrdom and the construction of sacred spaces. To this end, in this circumspection, it aims to analyze and reflect on which memory technologies were co-opted and which rhetoric in contemporary times the sanctuaries were intended; how and for what purpose the vestiges of the past and of a memory were alluded to and publicly suggested by the processes of making the sanctuaries; and what type of topophilia these sacred spaces intended to emerge, shoot or establish in the appreciating public. The main theoretical and methodological assumptions come from the concept of history as a myth and from the historiographical operation, as well as from the hieropolis, referring to a place of confluence of a demonstration of faith that acquires clear spatiality, as it involves the displacement of a place other. In the hieropolis there is a sacroprofan ritual in which the sacred and the profane, although distinct, are not opposed or excluded. In these links, a driving force of the religious phenomenon is demonstrated, resizing the economic, the political, the social, the place and the spatial organization. As for the sources, there are some historiographical works that addressed the martyrs and the first edition of the book Protomártires do Brasil: Cunhaú e Uruaçu - RN, by Monsignor Francisco de Assis Pereira, postulator of the cause of the martyrs. Upon concluding our analyzes and reflections, we observed that a mythological use of the past had been made, creating a narrative and spaces within which the faithful could inhabit and find meaning.
