SUMMARY:

In the sixteenth century, the imperial spanish expansion over the New World led to several human groups to fight prolonged and difficult wars. These no precedents events are often called “the Conquest of America”. Our study problematizes the notion of war and conquest, seeking to focus on the conflictive dimension as a mechanism that created a particular speciality, the tierra de guerra. The aim of this study is the periodical wars in Chile, generically called the Arauco war, between the mid 16th century  and mid 17th. For that, in the first place, we seek to understand the concept of war into the spanic culture  and the influence of certain conceptions linked to the notion of holy war and just war at the process of occupation of the New World. Starting with the analysis of spanish’s expansion in Nueva Extremadura, we intend to understand how the war between the invaders and the indigenous populations, usually called mapuches or araucanians, configured a litigious space in this province, a marginal part into a worldwide spanish overseas empire. That influence of the war over space took place in two mainly planes. First, there was a physical dimension: it produced an occupation of space  based  on the might of weapons. Cities, Fortress, and even Missions obeyed a military logic and contributed to imposition of a dominance over the inhabitants of the land. In second, there was an imagetical dimension: the defiant struggles stimulated a discursive production that depicted this new spatiality as a territory thought mainly from the point of view of its warlike specifications. In the indigenous background, conflicts produced a lot of modifications in their relationship with collectively organized violence, in their warlike culture and in their forms of social and spatial organization. This scenery brings us to a reflection on the several mechanisms used by spanish forces to impose their domain and, equally, on the indegenous resistance. The formation of a frontier was a result from the antagonism, exacerbated by the resistance of native people. From the second half of the XVII century, the conflicts declined and an exchange relationship was settled down between the two parts of the tierra de guerra. The violence, nonetheless, continued always present, although the age of the great uprisings and general rebellions has faded.
