SUMMARY:

The organization of commemorative celebrations exposes how agents and social groups are creators of the historical narrative - preserving memory, silencing or forgetting - that gives another meaning to their own cultural identity. Permeated by feelings and emotions, these agents transforms the representations of their spaces into new forms of spatial experiences, such as occurred in São Paulo between the years 1947 to 1954. Resentful of the political exclusion caused since the Revolution of 1930 - the economic elite linked the São Paulo State Industries Center (CIESP) and the political group of the Progressive Social Party (PSP) - idealized the celebrations of the IV Centenary of the Sao Paulo capital in light of a new identity resignification to represent the entire space of the region. Over the course of almost half a decade, the leadership position to promote the celebrations will be divided between the São Paulo elite and other groups – politicians dissidents and university intellectuals - who observed in the event a form of capital gains - whether political or economic - for their social group. Through the speeches of these diverse groups, a historiographic scenario is formed, in which, in particular, the performance of the Bandeirantes - a São Paulo identity symbol - will be the target of deep debates among different representatives of the groups that disputed about the narratives about the celebrations. Based on the tropological methodology, suggested by Metahistory’s Hayden White (1992), we observed how historiographic discourse distances itself through the different social spaces - and political ideological views - in which historians are inserted in society. Moving away from the São Paulo historiographical narratives of the 1920s, in which an approximation between the São Paulo region and Brazil was sought, the cartographic concepts of Ilha-Brasil - debated along the Querela Bandeirante between the Portuguese historian Jaime Cortesão and the historian Sérgio Buarque de Holanda - and the sculpture of Aspiral Ascendente - built in Ibirapuera Park by Oscar Niemeyer - re-signified the contemporary São Paulo identity through a regional apotheosis, forgetting and silencing the identity of formerly grounded only as a region of Brazilian territorial spatiality.
