SUMMARY:

This work intends to deal with the problem of the uses of the past for the present. To this end, it focuses on the sacred spaces devoted to the Martyrs of Cunhaú and Uruaçu, or Protomártires do Brasil, more specifically, tangent to the three sanctuaries, centers of religious function, created by the Archdiocese of Natal in Canguaretama, São Gonçalo do Amarante and Natal, municipalities of Rio Grande do Norte. The aim is to investigate the elements recaptured and managed by the Church, its faithful and collaborators with a view to the composition of the sanctuaries, in the space of 29 years (1988 to 2017), in which beatification, canonization of actors and subjects who suffered martyrdom and the construction of sacred spaces. To this end, in this circumspection, does it aim to analyze and reflect on which memory technologies were co-opted and which rhetoric in contemporary times were the sanctuaries intended? In what way and for what purpose were the vestiges of the past and a memory publicly alluded to and suggested by the processes of making shrines? What type of topophilia did these sacred spaces attempt to touch, shoot or establish in the appreciating public? These constitute capital questions that aim to compose the problematic that refers to the broader question: which elements and dimensions of the past, referring to the episodes of Cunhaú and Uruaçu, were co-opted and arranged for the composition and elaboration of the sacred spaces today targets of pilgrimages, devotion, celebrations and religious holidays, as well as local history, memory and identity? Consequently, the general objective is to discuss the elements that were arranged by the Catholic Church, collaborators and faithful, between 1988 and 2017, for the elaboration and use of the three sacred spaces, concerning the Protomártires do Brasil, built in Rio Grande do Norte. The main theoretical and methodological assumptions come from the concept of history as myth and from Michel de Certeau's historiographic operation, as well as that of hieropolis, proposed by geographer Zeny Rosendahl, referring to a place of confluence of a demonstration of faith that acquires a clear spatiality, because it involves moving from one place to another. In the hieropolis there is a “sacroprofan ritualistic” in which the sacred and the profane, although distinct, are not opposed or excluded. In these bonds, a driving force of the religious phenomenon is demonstrated, resizing the economic, the political, the social, the place and the spatial organization. As for the sources, there are some historiographical works that addressed the martyrs, the inaugural speeches of the shrines, reports, opinions and minutes of the diocesan phase of the process for beatification and canonization exposed in Positio (written dissertation containing information and documentation that aimed to provide the foundation historical and theological aspect of martyrdom, as well as the presentation of the proposal for beatification and canonization).
