SUMMARY:

The purpose of this paper is to analyze how indigenous nations are presented in 11 textbooks on the history of Rio Grande do Norte, with the oldest school book located in research, Geography and history of Rio Grande do Norte as the initial time frame, dated 1952, by professor Clementino Câmara, and as a final mark the work of the sociologist Marlúcia Galvão Brandão, divided into two volumes, entitled Rio Grande do Norte: Our people ... Our History of 1994, a work that inaugurates a singular proposal in the sense to cover only the content of History, unlike the nine research books that deal simultaneously with the components of History and Geography along the lines of the old discipline of Social Studies. The investigation sought to understand the social place – from the reflections of Michel de Certeau – of each of the 16 authors of the didactic works, seeking to understand the transformations and modifications in the materiality of the textbooks as proposed by Circe Bittencourt and Décio Gatti Júnior. In this way, the research understands the textbook as one of the main resources present in the school space, being an important historical source, providing multiple possibilities for research and interpretation, thus, it also reveals itself as a depository of information about indigenous societies in Brazil.
