SUMMARY:
This study investigates how the saint theft practice, a rite performed in favor of the rains in the Northeast, constitutes the hinterland as a sacred space in rural communities in the municipality of Pombal, in the state of Paraiba. We problematize the experiences, notably those of winter, the meanings and everyday interests that permeate the definition of rural spatialities from the theft of San Jose’ images, the patron saint of rains in this region. In theoretical terms, based on the concepts of Certeau (1998), J. Assmann (2016) and A. Assmann (2011), the research operationalizes the concepts of space, cultural memory and identity in order to investigate the sociocultural aspects mobilized by practice to configure the hinterlands' spatialities. As a methodology, from the analysis of Meyhy and Holanda (2011) and Delgado (2006), we used Oral History to dialogue with the memories that constitute orality around religious manifestation, evidenced by the memorialistic narratives of those who experience the local daily life. The iconological analysis of images and artifacts of faith linked to theft and the appreciation of written documents about local lives complement the methodological perspective of the research. Thus, we question how the memory inscribed in daily practice contributes in the formation of local spaces of remembrance and we seek to understand how the religious manifestations outlined by theft act in the sacredness of the hinterland, establishing socio-religious identities that territorialize the existences in these locations.
