SUMMARY:

This thesis analyse the influence and territorial development of the Catholic Church, Christianization of the east coast of capitany of Rio Grande, and the evangelization and moralization of slaves through the marriage sacrament, between 1727 to 1760, based on the marriage records of the Perish of “Nossa Senhora da Apresentação”, from the City of Natal. The data were treated methodologically using Serial History, Quantitative History and the Onomastic Method. Perish was the ecclesiastic power’s legal jurisdiction of the area, being the Main Church located in the City of Natal and it’s 9 chapels and 3 Indigenous Settlements extended through the streams of the rivers Jundiaí, Ceará-mirim, Mipibú, Potengi and Cajupiranga. Nowadays, those areas are known as the cities which shape the metropolitan area of Natal(Macaíba, Extremoz, São Gonçalo do Amarante, Parnamirim, São José de Mipibú and Nísia Floresta). The process of spatial appropriation happens through the construction of sacred buildings. Those churches were responsible for the control over the territory and its populace through the articulation between main church, settlements and annex chapels. The starting point of the time cut,1727, was chosen for not being found any marriage records before this date, and it was the closest period to the nominated “Barbarian’s War” (1683-1720), which occasioned the capture and enslavement of the native people, and their partial extermination. Part of the natives, probably, was sent to the coast of the capitany of Rio Grande, to fulfill the need for slave labor. The chronologic cut chosen finishes this analyses were 1760, when the perish suffered alterations on its geographic space and the area of it’s assistance was modified, what led to the reduction of its territorial area of influence. The chosen period was marked for the stabilization of the ecclesiastical structures of the Perish, after the Dutch occupation (1633- 1654) and the Barbarian’s War. This research analyse the profile of slaves in this territory and their strategies, specially regarding to the choice around the partners they opted to unite with. The records presented an expressive number of weddings between slaves of different origins, the inbreeding of African slaves of the same ethical group and its links resulted in a change of social status. Was observed that this space was distinguished by the union of the individual's differents “qualidades” and legal conditions, which made possible the biological and cultural diversity found in the Church’s documents.
