ABSTRACT

The present work analyzes, based on speeches and reports of the provincial presidents, how the medical and hygienist discourses took place in the second half of the 19th century, in the countryside of the province of Rio Grande do Norte. The factors that led to the construction of the public cemetery of the village of Conceição do Azevedo, currently Jardim do Seridó, a municipality located in Rio Grande do Norte, were analyzed, as well as how these factors led to changes in funeral culture and the social processes of perception of death and dying. The cemetery discussed in this research has been used since 1858, when it was built on a piece of land donated by Mr. Antonio de Azevedo Maia (3rd) with his wife, Úrsula Leite de Oliveira. The liturgical blessing of the cemetery took place on March 12, 1858, by Father Francisco Justino Pereira de Brito. In the 19th century, the influence of the State and of the Clergy in the construction of extramural cemeteries in the country were questions thought as a relation between political and religious powers regarding hygienist speeches and the spaces of death. Based on the assumption that the cemetery is an integral part of every city, in order to think about urbanization plans for the city, one must keep in mind the place where the people who have their final destination go;therefore, the purpose inserted in this study is to try to understand what is the relationship between the city of the dead and the city of the living, given the funeral rites lived by the people, drafting to what extent death was a terrible event for that time, and considering the number of deaths that occurred due to the diseases that plagued Seridó in the second half of the 19th century. The period studied includes the cholera outbreak and the death of children between 0 and 4 years old, caused by various diseases. Understanding how diseases attacked the region also makes one think about the attention given to the hinterland of thestate by the political actions, given that the speeches of political representatives often showed healthy and controllable spaces. Thereby, it is not just the construction of the cemetery that matters here, nor the changes in the death rites, as these factors have been shown by the historiography for some time, but rather, thinking about how politicians reacted to questions of public hygiene in the hinterland of Rio Grande do Norte, as well as the way that people in Vila de Jardim started to react to death and dying. The studies were carried out using death books, laws, municipal decrees, wills and posture codes.
