SUMMARY:

The dissertation analyzes the importance of Newton Navarro Bilro (1928-2002) intellectual and artist works for Natal and Rio Grande do Norte identity formation from a dichotomized spatial duality between the hinterland and the sea by the characters connected to these spaces. The work aims to analyze the construction of his art, which at the same time was a representation of biographical experiences, as well as an archive of images extracted from his readings and his aesthetic experiences. He elaborated a series of psychosocial individuals defined by their professional activities, such as: cowboys, fishermen, sailors and raftsmen who became characters linked to Natal, as well as to Rio Grande do Norte. Navarro establishes a kind of figurality by mapping imagetically and socially these spaces. The text aims to analyse how artistic production acts as a historical document and an identity tool, which in the case of Navarrese art was appropriated by the municipal and state governments, between 1960 and 1980´s. The navarrean pictorial works analysis was made based on two assumptions: understanding Navarro as a psychosocial subject and, at the same time, the transformations that Natal and Rio Grande do Norte went through, from the cotton modernization and cattle ranching, through the World War II and its effects on the modernization policies of municipal and state governments, such as Sylvio Pedrosa, Djalma Maranhão and Aluisio Alves govern roles. The first chapter analyse a navarrean imagery linked to the idea of sertão, articulating earth element, male dimension, and relationship with his father figure, in works that seek the representation of telluric power. The second chapter focuses on the constitution of a matriarchal world, represented by his mother and grandmother, which was restructured by the effects of the Second World War. Besides, it analyzes the navarrean construction about the city of Natal as a world connected to the liquid, to the male erotic oneirism that maps a coastal city and a hybrid space between the river and the sea. The third chapter, based on the trajectory of Navarro's adult life, seeks to analyze his visual grammar, supported by the hybridization of images about the hinterland and the sea, crossed by a deep religiosity and the conflict between the sacred and the profane, the desire and censorship, Dionysus and Apollo, the visual grammar of a man subjectively torn apart by conflicts and contradictory social performances.
