RESUMO:

The aim of this dissertation is to analyze the constitution and consolidation of the Brazilian Catholic social space centered in the city of Rio de Janeiro in the 1930s, as well as the social and political restructuring of the Brazilian Catholic Church carried out through the project of Neo-Christianity headed by Dom Sebastião Leme. To this end, we chose as a time frame the period from 1930 - 1935, because we believe it to be a strategic moment to understand the Church's actions and strategies, which sought to reconstruct its relations with the state, shaken since the Constitution of 1891 made it official and made, also, the rupture between church and state. Faced with this new reality, the Church made new agreements and drafted new plans of action, such as the creation of the Catholic Electoral League, which by granting Church support to candidates who would defend their interests, helped elect a number of deputies who would became defenders of Catholic interests within the Constituent Assembly of 1933. In connection with this, we seek to follow the trajectory of some important Catholic agents, largely responsible for directing, coordinating, and disseminating Church projects in the first half of the 1930s. In keeping with the principles of Pope Pius XI's encyclical Ubi arcano Dei consilio, of 1922, which encouraged Catholics to leave the private realm and work to build a Christian society. In this sense, we are interested, above all, in the trajectories of Archbishop Sebastião Leme, one of the most outstanding Catholic characters of the twentieth century, leader of the Neo-Christianity project and organizer of the Catholic Electoral League; Bishop José Pereira, bishop of Niterói and director of the Vozes de Petrópolis Publishing House, was responsible for the publication of important Catholic books, which served the Boa Imprensa and, finally, Father José Cabral, editor-in-chief of the newspaper A Cruz, organ of the Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro and the Catholic Confederation, which, being one of the leading Catholic periodicals of the period, was responsible for giving voice to the most outstanding Catholic intellectuals, especially the laity, engaged in the construction of Catholic anti-communist discourse. Father J. Cabral also stood out as a writer linked to Catholic reactionary, publishing the works Conceitos e Factos and A Miragem Soviética, examples of this aspect of his production, as we will explain throughout the work. The newspaper A Cruz, the Proceedings of the 1933 Constituent Assembly, and the above mentioned Father J. Cabral's books constitute the principal sources of this work. Theoretically, we highlight the contributions of Pierre Bourdieu, Edward Shils and Renato Amado Peixoto, writers who base the discussions regarding the Church's spatial performance and the relations between the political and religious fields.
