RESUMO:

This dissertation aims to analyze the representations of Cleopatra and the Egypt created by Plutarch in his book Life of Antonio. By biographing the life of the Roman general, Plutarch ends up registering his vision of the queen of Egypt and of her people. Plutarch reconfigures facts, data, in short, his own history with a biographical, documentary and historical writing but strategically at the same time, dramatic, theatrical, emotional and moralizing from the point of view of an ideologically marked place, of a citizen of a Greek pólis (Cheroneia) who lived under Roman control. The philosopher narrates his vision of the East, (con)figured in the representation of Cleopatra and Egypt. The main analytical categories used in the achievement of this dissertation are, mainly, imperialism, orientalism, romanization and identity. In this sense, the main theorists who contribute to the research are Guarinello (1994; 2006a; 2006b; 2008; 2009; 2010), Hingley (1989: 1991; 1993; 1995a; 1995b; 1996; 1997; 2000; 2001; 2002; 2003; 2005; 2008; 2010; 2011; 2014; 2017), Mattingly (1996; 1997; 2004; 2006; 2010a; 2010b; 2010c), Revell (1999; 2000; 2009a; 2009b; 2009c; 2016), Said, (1995; 2007), Woolf (1990; 1994; 1997; 1998a; 1998b; 1998c; 2001; 2003). gley. This theoretical instrument offers the epistemological bases necessary to support analytical procedures and allows the development of points of view on the chosen corpus. The methodology used to develop the analysis is based on the traditional form of historiographer work, that is, the internal and external critiques of the sources, combined with the quota analysis. This research intends to show that Plutarch, in composing the image of Cleopatra and the representation of Egypt, does so from an orientalist perspective, from a stereotyped oppositional dichotomies and sustained by a moralistic and imperialist ideology. He tries to subjugate them in favor of an alleged greco-roman superiority. Thereby, Plutarch's text and the history of Cleopatra are rethought, giving the discussions a more peripheral perspective and proposing a procedure that considers cultural exchanges at the expense of a cultural hierarchy
