Military Administration. Captaincy of Rio Grande. Backlands. “Mestiços”.

PÁGINAS: 74
GRANDE ÁREA: Ciências Humanas
ÁREA: História
RESUMO:

This examines the admission of “mestiços” (mixed race) individuals into the Captaincy of Rio Grande’s military administration between the 17th, the 18th, and the first years of the 19th centuries. To do that, it sifts through, by the means of quantitative analysis, the social profile of army men and army officials who worked for the  military administration of such Captaincy, aiming to make sense of the role reserved for “mestiços” in this stance of colonial bureaucracy installed during the Ultramar period. In consonance with this, it also discusses the institutionalization process of the military administration at Ribeira do Seridó, in the backlands of Captaincy of Rio Grande’s riverside, which had, inbetween the Lusitanian efforts to expand towards the American countryside, a military structure as its first territorial landmark: the Casa Forte de Cuó (“Cuó Stronghold”), built between 1686 and 1687. Methodologically, this has taken into consideration the play of scales, as discussed by French historian Jacques Revel, in which macro (the Captaincy of Rio Grande) and micro (Ribeira do Seridó) spaces meet to make it possible to approach the military administration’s role in westernizing and territorializing Ribeira do Seridó, as well as the social composition of the military corps then existent in the Captaincy of Rio Grande. In terms of documentation, this is supported by military (assignments of army personnel), parochial (baptism, marriage and death registries), and judicial (post-mortem inventories) sources, determined by the aforementioned temporal-spatial outline and submitted to data cross-examination, as well as to quantitative, serial and qualitative analyses. After these document analyses, it was concluded, among other things, that colonists of diverse qualities, conditions and birthplaces enrolled for military services in the Captaincy of Rio Grande, and they acted as a unit, for example, in the War of Barbarians. It was also concluded that there were patterns in personnel assignments within the Captaincy and, because of that, it isn’t possible to establish homogenous and linear profiles for the army men and army officials in this colonial territory, during the investigated timeline. Lastly, it is believed that this work will be able to fill out some historiographical gaps in terms of research concerning the military administration in Ribeira do Seridó, and in the Captaincy of Rio Grande itself, focusing on the role of “mestiços” within that field of colonial administration.
