RESUMO:

ABSTRACT:

Catimbó-jurema is a religious manifestation, whose origins are related to indigenous groups that once inhabited the Brazilian northeastern region. Research on this religious category has been performed for more than 80 years. In order to contribute to current discussions on the subject, which are still relatively scarce, this work revisits some related works regarded as “classical” in order to understand the arrangements that Catimbó used to present in the 1920’s and 1930’s, time in which Andrade’s, Bastide’s and Krab’s researches were conducted. The proposed literature review will be an interesting support to understanding some of the mechanisms dealt with by Juremeiros (adherents to the said religion) to (re)updating their belief system. One of Catimbó’s cornerstones is based on the concept that the spirit world has “enchanted cities”, which the Juremeiros regard as mystical and imaginary places inhabited by the lord masters, caboclos, kings and enchanted beings. Such “cities” have their topography and organization similar to this world’s. The Jurema cosmogony about such spaces is complex because it includes a series of imagetic-discursive representations forged by Northeastern indigenous groups and adopted by adherents of the Catimbó during its stage of formation as a religion. Based on the assertions of Juremeiros, we will outline an analysis of the imaginary and imagined construction of such spaces, aiming to introduce the reader to a “geography of the supernatural” of the spatiality of the Catimbó. Various expressions concerning liturgy and Jurema’s worldview carry inside themselves spatial notions and metaphors used in everyday religious “right-left”, “up-down”, among others. Such notions act in a fruitful way in order to assist in the production of descriptibility and visibility of material and immaterial spaces. In this spatiality construction practice, the human body has become a reference – “man is the measure”, says Yi-Fu Tuan.
