RESUMO:

We conducted an analysis of the relationship between Catholicism and the city of Natal (RN ) in the first half of the twentieth century, a period in which Brazil lived a historic moment marked by the consolidation of a new political system and urban sprawl as in Christmas. This research examines the relationship between Catholic discursive practices and Natal place in the years 1910-1939  In this sense, we reflect the feast of Our Lady of the Presentation, the patron saint of the city, and represented Matrix as monument were producing practices of the city? Which way were devised? This study aimed to analyze the imbricated association between religious institutions, faith and place, considering the historical context when Brazil went through a moment of social unrest, in which the principles brought by modernity were not originated in Catholicism. In this way, we sought to understand the reaction of the Catholic Church to this new historical moment, through the use of patroness symbolism, memory landmarks, sacred processions, awareness and the construction the city features on the Catholic faith. The answers to our questions were found in discourses contained in the pages of the newspapers A República, 1910-1939, A Ordem, 1935-1939 and chapter A Matriz de Natal written by  Nestor Santos Lima, a potiguar writer, to the journal of the Instituto Histórico e Geográfico do Rio Grande do Norte. We sought to understand that cities are the result of architectural materiality, the relationship with nature, and the transforming human experience, in the lines of the Italian writer Giulio Argan. Michel Foucault’s ideas about discourse, Doreen Massey’s conception about space and place, Fredrik Barth’s as identity, Aleida Assmann’s on memory location compose the theoretical framework adopted. It was also very important for this work to research on the party in Brazil Colonial developed by Mary Del Priore, construction/use of public and private religious spaces by Sergio Chahon, Luis da Câmara Cascudo and its historical reading of the city that is our object, Denise Monteiro and the history of Rio Grande do Norte, the history of the city of Natal in the research coordinated by Raimundo Arrais and Angela Ferreira. In short, we question a scribed relationship between religiosity and city. We intend this research contribute to the knowledge of Natal training trajectories in the early twentieth century.
