RESUMO:
This study aims to investigate the political and religious activities of the Catholic Church north of Rio Grande between 1935 and 1937, through the examination of its journal, the newspaper 'The Order'. We believe that this action relates to the problems posed to the Church with the advent of the Republic, when it was formally separated from the state and needed to respond to its decline as an institution. It would be from an internal reorganization, with the expansion of the system of dioceses and expansion of the cadres of clerics and lay intellectuals, form tables of clerics and lay intellectuals, the Brazilian Catholic Church rebuild its influence on society and politics of the country. In the 1930s, in the context of liberalism fall, the Church has had a vast diocesan network, a Catholic press and intellectual militants can spread their thinking and combat the "modern evil", namely communism, Protestantism , Freemasonry and liberalism. Underlying these issues is the foundation of the Catholic North Rio Grande newspaper 'The Order' in 1935, which revealed us to be entered in the 'good press' project in this state, through the intellectual layman Otto Guerra efforts on the Marian Sodality of Young Men. This paper then becomes the spokesman for the Church, supporting its state political project, ongoing since the 30 Revolution, when the Christmas Diocese came to occupy the gaps in the political field left by the wildly between local family organizations and the central government. This would consolidate more after the Communist Lift 1935, since the Church now has the legitimacy and leadership when it came to the enunciation of the anticommunist speech at the local level. Because of this it is that the Levant also be as leveler of differences between church and family organizations North Rio Grande, once rivals. Symptomatically, from 1936, the newspaper 'The Order' would cover the Spanish Civil War events, which serve, in our view, to strengthen political views and religious of North Rio Grande Church, by emphasizing on anticommunism.
