AREA: Turismo
SUMMARY:

Monuments are buildings with the purpose of remembering or enabling other generations to revisit events, sacrifices, rites or beliefs, contributing to the preservation of the ethnic, religious, national, tribal or family identity of a location, and denoting power, grandeur and beauty, being responsible for affirming great public purposes, promoting styles and stimulating aesthetic sensitivity. The religious use of monuments has resulted in meanings and benefits that go beyond those associated with Catholic symbolism, and, although its materiality serves to boost devotion to the saints it honors, it has been resized for the tourist market. Due to the great demand for religious destinations, and their popular appeal, governments have invested in promoting the religious segment, in the hope of capturing the benefits that tourist activity can provide to destinations. This incentive has occurred through the construction of monuments in honor of saints of popular devotion, sanctuaries and also through the drafting of laws establishing religious tourism routes. Within this context, this project aims to analyze the effectiveness of public policies and ecclesial actions and devotion to Catholic monuments as an incentive device in the creation of tourist destinations, discussing the relationships that involve the implementation of these buildings, from their conception, with the creation of public policies to promote tourism, its management and dissemination, and commercialization under the backdrop of religion. The field of study is the CRAJUBAR complex, made up of the Ceará municipalities of Crato, Juazeiro do Norte and Barbalha (CE). The theoretical framework presents discussions between monuments and their use in the service of the Catholic faith linked to public policies to encourage religious tourism. This is a multiple case study in which a comparative analysis will be carried out regarding the reasons that led to the construction of the monuments of Our Lady of Fátima in Crato (CE), Santo Antônio in Barbalha (CE), and Padre Cícero in Juazeiro do North (CE), as well as the tourist use that has been practiced, highlighting the policies that promote the activity, examining political and ecclesiastical relationships in the creation of religious tourism destinations in the state. Data collection will be through documentary research, observation and interviews. The data collected will be analyzed using qualitative content analysis. As research perspectives, it is expected that its results can support the development of more effective public policies in order to safeguard cultural/religious aspects of localities, enabling discussions and propositions based on the preservation of the religious values of local devotion.
