SUMMARY:

Community-Based Tourism (CBT) is a form of tourism management generally developed in the territory of indigenous peoples and traditional communities under the principles of self-management, social equity, solidarity, cooperation and interculturality. The majority participation of women in TBC initiatives is widely recognized by the World Tourism Organization (WTO) and the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women). The role of women in TBC initiatives, however, does not lead to an automatic process of female empowerment and gender equality. In this sense, the study aims to analyze the role of women in the development of Community-Based Tourism in the Catu dos Eleotérios indigenous community, located in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, and its possible effects on female empowerment and indigenous social dynamics. As specific objectives, the work aims to: reveal the indigenous social dynamics and the sexual division of labor in the Catu dos Eleotérios community; identify the results generated by Community-Based Tourism and the challenges for its development, from the perspective of catuzeira women; and verify whether Community-Based Tourism triggered processes of female empowerment and changes in the social position of women in the indigenous community. The research used the ethnographic method as inspiration, with the application of participant observation techniques and semi-structured interviews, making it possible to explore the perspectives, experiences and meanings attributed by women to their involvement in CBT. As a result, there is an initial process of female empowerment of catuzeira women in the psychological, social, economic and political dimensions. In the psychological dimension, the increase in self-esteem, active participation, self-confidence and greater autonomy of indigenous women is notable. In the social dimension, women are positioned more independently, gaining visibility, speaking and decision-making power, strengthening the social position of women within the community. In the economic dimension, women now have an alternative source of income through tourism, providing greater financial autonomy and influence in family dynamics, with prominent roles as entrepreneurs and artisans. With regard to political empowerment, women began to participate more in community decisions and represent the community in external organizations, however, they still do not exercise leadership roles. Despite advances, some challenges persist regarding gender inequality, such as the overload of women in domestic activities and machismo based on patriarchal structures, obstacles rooted in the social structure of the community, which still need to be overcome.
