SUMMARY:

This research addresses the issue of the lack of reliable methods to calculate the carbon footprint of lodging facilities, taking into consideration the growing importance of sustainable tourism and the need to address the challenges of climate change. The aim of this study is to assess and compare the currently available methodologies for estimating the carbon footprint in this sector, with the purpose of enhancing sustainable practices. Through a systematic literature review, different methodological approaches are analyzed, identifying the advantages, challenges, and limitations of each. Among the intermediate objectives, the identification of the main methodologies used is included, along with conducting a detailed analysis of their structures and characteristics, with an emphasis on the advantages related to accuracy and emissions tracking. Furthermore, this research provides recommendations for the appropriate selection of methodologies, aligned with global sustainability goals. These guidelines have the potential to encourage more responsible practices in the hospitality sector, resulting in carbon emissions reduction and promoting a more conscious approach to tourism in the face of global climate change. In summary, this dissertation contributes to the advancement of sustainable tourism by addressing the critical need for accurate assessment of the carbon footprint of lodging facilities. By critically evaluating existing methodologies and proposing refined selection criteria, the study guides the hospitality sector to adopt effective strategies in carbon footprint reduction. Ultimately, this work serves the broader goal of creating a more environmentally conscious and resilient tourism sector in the midst of the complex challenges presented by climate change.
