SUMMARY:

Community-based tourism has as its principle the self-management of tourist activity by the host communities, especially by traditional peoples and communities, under the values of social equity, solidarity and cooperation. Some studies have already tried to observe the important role that women have played in community-based tourism, but there are few works that look into whether and how female empowerment of indigenous women occurs when they get involved in community-based tourism. In this sense, the objective of the research is to analyze the role of women in the development of community-based tourism and its effects on the social dynamics of the indigenous community Catu dos Eleotérios, located between the municipalities of Canguaretama and Goianinha, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. As specific objectives, the study aims to: reveal the indigenous social dynamics before and after the development of community-based tourism initiatives, from the perspective of community members; verify whether community-based tourism triggered processes of female empowerment and changes in the social position of indigenous women in the community; and identify the results generated by community-based tourism and the challenges for its development and consolidation, from the perspective of Catuzeiras women. The research will use the ethnographic method, which will make it possible to explore the perspectives, experiences and meanings attributed by women to their involvement in TBC and to immerse themselves in the reality of these women and in the social dynamics of the community. To collect information, the technique of participant observation and semi-structured interviews will be used with women who work directly in tourism, women who do not work in tourism and community leaders. A bibliographical research on gender studies, women's empowerment, indigenous communities and community-based tourism will also be carried out, in order to support discussions about the research problem. The information collected in the field, through interviews and participant observation, will be interpreted and analyzed from the precepts of ethnography, considering the specificities that the researcher's position, as part of the social group under study, entails for the analysis.
