SUMMARY:

Hotel business, a term that encompasses all lodging services, plays a significant role in the tourism sector, as it is an essential part of guests’ travel experience. Through the analysis of accommodation activities, it becomes evident that both tangible and intangible aspects influence the quality of service provided by establishments, directly impacting not only sector evaluations but also travel destination choices. Among the intangible aspects, hospitality stands out as a determining factor for the excellence and positioning of lodging facilities, as the service provided must be simultaneously effective, efficient, and humanized. Therefore, by achieving these three dimensions, hotels increase their chances of success in a highly competitive environment. In this regard, hospitality must be considered in the context of transitory competitive advantage, especially as traditional classification models, for example, may be deemed unsustainable amidst contemporary technological innovations. In the Brazilian context, hospitality can be presented as a relevant factor, and it is in this direction that the present research heads – with the general objective of investigating the relationship between Brazilian hospitality and the standardization of services in international chain hotels, from the perspective of transitory competitive strategy. Thereunto, specific objectives were outlined in order to support the overall conduction of the study, namely: understand the perception of Brazilian hospitality in international chain hotels; characterize service standardization in hotel management of international chains; identify how transitory competitive advantages are embedded in internationally branded hotels; and propose reflections regarding the role of Brazilian hospitality and service standardization in the transitory competitive advantage environment. The study takes a descriptive-exploratory approach with a qualitative stance, interviewing individuals who have worked – or continue to work – in the analyzed establishments for a period of at least two years in leadership positions. Consequently, it becomes possible to better comprehend such process over recent years, given the current scenario of constant changes, including the COVID-19 pandemic phase. After data collection, the information was discussed and examined through both theoretical and empirical lenses, aiming to contribute to advancing the literature on the role of Brazilian hospitality concerning international standardizations within the transitory competitive advantage framework.
