BIG AREA: Ciências Sociais Aplicadas
AREA: Turismo
SUMMARY:

Interest in coastal areas grows as leisure and tourism practices consolidate as sources of socialization and capitalist reproduction. Added to this data, the fact that the current economic order accelerates the circulation of capital between the circuits of the economy and marginal territories for the global market, at the same time that it demands new commitments from the State with the productive sector, in the search for the best earning opportunities. One of the results of this situation has been the production of built space, which includes a pattern of urbanization and real estate aimed at the needs of vacationers, visitors and rentiers. In this way, territories located by the sea and valued by investments in the tourism and real estate sectors acquire the status of a resource for accumulation. The insertion of this market, its agents and its processes, however, gives rise to conflicts with actors who are not aligned with the new activities. At this moment, another connotation of the territory becomes evident, as the shelter of its own forms of existence. With this context, the research aims to investigate the occurrence of territorial conflicts motivated by the spatialization of tourist activity in municipalities facing the sea, along the Brazilian Northeastern coast, highlighting the resistance processes developed by the affected populations. This is a qualitative investigation, which uses documents, interviews and participant observation as data collection strategies. Preliminary data point to conflicts concentrated in the Northeast Region, mainly promoted by hegemonic actors in the production of space - the real estate sector and the State -, in which coastal lands, located in rural towns, are the main resources in dispute with population groups dependent on this resource for social reproduction. These are deterritorialization processes that use material and symbolic strategies to effect dominion over space. The advancement of the research will provide an examination of the logic of public and private investments for the occupation of the northeastern coast, the focus of conflicts, but mainly, unveil the main strategies of re-territorialization and forms of r-existence developed by non-hegemonic actors in different struggle contexts.
