SUMMARY:

The use of seaweed in agriculture as biofertilizers can promote more sustainable agricultural production. Biofertilizers contain substances that can increase the rate of germination, growth and development of plants, in addition to being a renewable source for the environment. Currently, its use is an alternative to face climatic and environmental challenges, making agricultural crops more resistant to biotic and abiotic stresses. Therefore, the present study aimed to verify the effect of biofertilizer from seaweed Kappaphycus alvarezii on germination, growth and initial development of safflower seedlings (Carthamus tinctorius L.). The experiment was conducted from obtaining Kappaphycus alvarezii, processed to obtain a concentrated aqueous extract. This extract was diluted in two concentrations (1% and 10%) and used in a germination test with safflower seeds (n = 2,160). The parameters evaluated in this study included germination percentage (%G), germination speed index, shoot and root length (cm), fresh and dry mass (g) in the following safflower cultivars: IMAMT 1470 , IMAMT 894 and IMAMT S525. Data were statistically analyzed using Factorial Interaction ANOVA and Tukey's test, attributing p < 0.05 of significance to the results obtained. It was observed that at a lower concentration of the biofertilizer extract, the safflower seedlings showed a significant performance among the analyzed cultivars, according to each treatment, for all evaluated parameters.
