SUMMARY:

Ecosystem Services (ES) can be defined as goods that are generated by ecosystems and that help human life and well-being, and for many researchers, it is essential to identify and value them, so that this information can be used to help managers and policy makers to optimize the structure and composition of urban green spaces in order to preserve or maximize the supply of these ecosystem services. That said, this work aimed to identify, based on the Common International Classification of Ecosystem Services (Cices), those present in the areas of Dunes, sparse sandbank, Semideciduous Station Forest and dense sandbank of Parque da Cidade Dom Nivaldo Monte (PCDNM), located in the municipality of Natal, in the Rio Grande do Norte state, aiming at the stipulation of how much regulars would be willing to pay for their preservation and maintenance, given the importance of this green area for the local environment. In addition, a Management Plan was reviewed in order to identify how the results of the work could help in decisionmaking, aiming at its effective conservation. In the first stage, 12 Regulation Ecosystem Services, 10 Cultural Ecosystem Services and 4 Provision Ecosystem Services were identified. Of these, the semideciduous seasonal forest was responsible for 25 identified services, the sparse sandbank and the dense sandbank, separately, for 21, and the dune environment that does not have vegetation cover, for 13, indicating the importance of vegetation for the purpose of the park, which is to combine sustainability with human interaction. For the valuation of environmental services, the second stage of the project, interviews will be conducted to understand the importance of that green area for its visitors, in addition to using the contingent valuation method to find out if and how much PCDNM visitors would be willing to pay for the maintenance and preservation of that urban green area. The results should serve as a contribution to future public policies aimed at sustainability, increasing environmental awareness, both for residents of the surroundings, regulars and other people who benefit from the local nature.
