SUMMARY:

The situation of preserving the environment, especially in the Northeast region of Brazil, has historical roots, since the colonization process and its profile of extractive economy, which, linked to the practices adopted in popular agriculture, reflect in the devaluation of the Caatinga. One of the factors that contribute to this devaluation is botanical blindness, conceptualized as a reduced capacity that an individual has over the plant world. The problem of this work is to verify whether “What are the possible contributions of botany teaching in a didactic proposal for the awareness, preservation and appreciation of the Caatinga?”, which guides its objective of evaluating the potential contributions of an educational action regarding the Caatinga biome to the sensitization of students about the preservation of this. In order to reach this objective, a research with a qualitative approach was carried out, using action-research as a methodological procedure, which has an educational nature and allows a wide interaction between the researcher and the components of the approached sample. This was made up of students who entered the academic semesters 2020.1, 2020.2 and 2021.1, in subsequent courses in Agriculture and Agroindustry at the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of the Sertão Pernambucano, on the Ouricuri campus, a municipality belonging to the Sertão do Araripe Pernambucano, reaching a total of 88 participants. As tools, this research used questionnaires applied before and after carrying out a pedagogical intervention, a 10-hour short course, which addressed topics such as 1) Conservation and use of biodiversity, 2) Native species and their relationship with other organisms, 3) Technological alternatives for a sustainable means of survival; 4) Increase of the economic, cultural and social capacity of the population and 5) Management of water and soil resources. The application of the questionnaires and the completion of the short course were preceded by a favorable analysis by the Research Ethics Committee of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte. The data from the questionnaires were tabulated in electronic spreadsheets and analyzed in order to obtain the students' perception of the Caatinga, before and after the intervention, in order to verify possible contributions to this perception. Initially there was a predominance of negative perception about the Caatinga, however it was observed the recognition of the school and teaching actions as a source of awareness of the importance of the Caatinga. After applying the short course, a change in the students' perception was observed, with positive variation in aspects related to the perception and recognition of didactic activities as important for the contribution to the preservation and conservation of the Caatinga.
