BIG AREA: Outra
AREA: Ciências Ambientais
SUMMARY:

The situation of environmental preservation, especially in the Northeast region of Brazil, has historical roots, from the colonization process and your extractive economy profile, which linked to the practices adopted in popular agriculture reflect in the devaluation of the Caatinga. One of the factors that contribute to this devaluation is botanical blindness, conceptualized as a reduced capacity that an individual has over the plant world. This work has as a problem to verify if "Does the teaching of botany in a didactic proposal contribute to the awareness, preservation and appreciation of the Caatinga?", which guides its objective of evaluating the potential contributions of an educational action regarding the Caatinga biome for the awareness of students about its preservation. To achieve this objective, a qualitative approach was carried out, using action research as a methodological procedure, which has an educational nature and allows for a broad interaction between the researcher and the components of the sample addressed. This was composed of students who entered the academic semesters 2020.1, 2020.2 and 2021.1, in the subsequent courses in Agriculture and Agroindustry of the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Sertão Pernambucano, from the Ouricuri campus, a city belonging to the Sertão do Araripe Pernambucano, reaching a total of 88 participants. As tools, this research used questionnaires applied before and after a pedagogical intervention, a 10-hour mini-course, which addressed topics such as 1) Conservation and use of biodiversity, 2) Native species and their relationship with other organisms ; 3) Technological alternatives for a sustainable livelihood; 4) Increase in the economic, cultural and social capacity of the population and 5) Management of water and soil resources. The application of the questionnaires and the completion of the mini-course was preceded by a favorable analysis by the Research Ethics Committee of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte. Data from the questionnaires were tabulated in electronic spreadsheets and analyzed in order to obtain the students' perception of the Caatinga, before and after the intervention, to verify the possible contributions to this perception. So far, after processing the pre-intervention questionnaires, there was a predominance of negative perception about the Caatinga, however, the recognition of the school and teaching actions as a source of awareness of the importance of the Caatinga was observed. Once the mini-course has been applied, it remains necessary to verify the possible effects, by analyzing the data from the post-intervention questionnaires, in order to compare them.
