SUMMARY:

The state of Rio Grande do Norte, located in the northeastern region of Brazil, has areas of granite formation and pegmatites with minerals that have significant concentrations of Uranium, Thorium and Potassium, whose radioactive isotopes and their decay products can serve as sources of contamination through inhalation, absorption through the skin or ingestion. Previous studies have determined high concentrations of the Radon gas, which is present in the Uranium decay chain, in the water bodies and residences of cities in the regions of Seridó and the Pegmatitic Province of Borborema. Cancer incidence studies also found cities with higher indicators than the national average in these regions. The present epidemiological study aims to analyze the occurrence of cancer cases and its linkage with exposure to natural sources of radioactivity through the DATASUS database and a geographic information system (GIS).The results showed the formation of clusters in the municipalities located in the regions of Seridó and Pegmatitic Province of Borborema, where a higher rate of deaths caused by the types of cancer surveyed were seen when compared to cities with similar socioeconomic characteristics and HDI.
