SUMMARY:

The Brazilian northeast semi-arid region experiences historical water scarcity due to climate and environmental characteristics coupled with the governance negligence in designing efficient water management. Eutrophication of aquatic environments has been favored within this scenario in the Rio Grande do Norte (RN) state and, consequently, changes have been observed in the water quality available to the population. The study was developed based on four aims, in which each aim corresponds to a manuscript that composes the dissertation. Chapter 1 aimed to characterize the metagenomics diversity of the phytoplankton community, focusing on cyanobacteria, and comparing it with another study based on traditional approach in two tropical reservoirs located in RN during an extreme drought event. To achieve this aim, data from sample sequencing from Boqueirão de Parelhas and Passagem das Traíras reservoirs were investigated. Chapter 2 aimed to compile literature data to explain how the social formulation of environmental risk due to potentially toxic algae bloom in the hydrographic Basin of Piancó-Piranhas-Açu occurred, as well as to analyze the social and environmental implications of eutrophication. To accomplish this study, secondary data published by researchers and environmental water quality monitoring agencies of the RN state were used. Chapter 3 aimed to create and validate the Instrument for Planning and Didactic Socio-scientific Issues Assessment (IPAD QSC) as instructional material to support teachers to plan and evaluate the lessons focusing on education and scientific lettering. Therefore, a didactic material proposal was developed based on the relevant theoretical framework and appreciated by science and biology teachers. Chapter 4, still under preparation, aims to analyze the pedagogical practices of teachers in initial and continuing education to understand how educational activities have contributed to the promotion of scientific lettering associated with water issues. A distance learning pedagogical course was offered as an extension activity to undergraduate and graduate teachers in Biological Sciences from different higher education institutions in Brazil. As a final activity, the participants had to develop a teaching sequence proposal using the IPAD QSC. As a result, the phytoplankton composition analysis by metagenomics detected 238 taxa, distributed in 13 divisions, with a predominance of cyanobacteria in the Passagem das Traíras (99.5%) and Boqueirão de Parelhas reservoirs (92.6%). The literature data highlighted several risks linked to eutrophication such as water contamination by cyanotoxins, ecological changes in the aquatic community, reduction in species richness, a high increase in algal biomass, change in limnological patterns of water resources, and damage to human health depending on the contaminated water use. The educational contribution of the IPAD QSC was estimated and demonstrated through the evaluated criteria analysis, according to questionnaires, evidencing its validation as support material for teachers. Water quality can be categorized as a theme to be mobilized in educational processes contributing directly to the process of scientific lettering due to inter-multidisciplinary dimensions.
