RESUMO:

From the year 2008, Brazil became the largest consumer of pesticides in the world. Studies indicate that this consumption is due to the modernization of agriculture in Brazil  in the 1960s, based on the principles of the green revolution with the introduction of modern agricultural inputs. Studies such as Abrasco (2015) question this model showing how this modernization is a source of contamination not only of soils, but also of people. Such process exposes the population in general to a series of risks, increasing the conditions of vulnerabilities, especially the pesticide sprayer worker who during his working activity is exposed to the use and handling of pesticides, as far as labor relations are concerned, regarding health conditions. In Rio Grande do Norte, the municipality of Vera Cruz, is remarkable by a growing agricultural expansion comprising irrigated crops that support agribusiness, such as the intensive use of chemical inputs. Thus, the objective of this study was to study the context of social and environmental vulnerability, as well as to map the group of workers who carry out and / or who are subjected to the function of pesticide sprayer in the agreste Potiguar region, especially in the municipality of Vera Cruz. The methodological procedures adopted consisted of a non-probabilistic, qualitative sampling basis using the snowball technique to collect data regarding socioeconomic aspects and the peculiarities involving the activity of this group of workers within the scope of this analysis. As partial considerations, it was identified that in the development of agriculture of the municipality of Vera Cruz does not people’s safety and health, nor the aggravation of environmental degradation. It was also ascertained that in agriculture the bases that sustain the agribusiness, representing an unsustainable production model. Since it generates unsafe, degrading and unhealthy conditions in agricultural spaces, such as cheap and informal labor of spraying workers, as well as contributing to the depletion of natural resources. Thus, once this process is unsustainably practiced, its intensification facilitates the aggravation of social and environmental vulnerabilities, resulting in a series of environmental changes and problems, such as contamination of soil, air, water and the death of animal species, contibuting to the contamination of human health.
