RESUMO:

Contamination of water resources from anthropic actions, such as mining, is a concern for public health, especially due to the complex mixtures present in effluents that are discharged into surface waters intended for human consumption. One of the main impacts caused by mining activity is the input of heavy metals in the ground. As a result, there is a suppression of vegetation and a change in water quality by the presence of substances carried by the effluents of the mining areas. The activities of mining and mineral processing can also contribute to water surface and underground pollution, if there is no strict control of the operations involved. Additionally, erosion and siltation processes that occur in mines and can contribute to the increased concentration of heavy metals in water given this scenario. The present study aimed to assess the induced genetic toxicity by waste from a Potiguar a mine located at the Potiguar Semiarid linked to an environmental perception study on the subject of mining and the various environmental compartments performed with primary school students. For the analysis of the physical and chemical parameters and for mutagenicity testing, water samples were collected from Brejui Mine in the city of Currais Novos and Fazenda Bento Nunes in the city of Santa Cruz, this last one being a control area. To address the environmental issue, questionnaires in two public schools in the study areas were applied. The results related to the study of environmental perception allowed a comparison between schools and in this way make it possible to formulate a diagnosis of the performance relation of each one to environmental perception. The analysis showed the construction process environmental knowledge, with which students perceive the impact of this type of activity (mining) to the environment, regardless if whether it is inserted in their reality or not. Physico-chemical analysis revealed the presence of inorganic substances higher than the concentrations allowed by Brazilian legislation, especially Al, NH3 and total phosphorus for the samplings performed. Aluminum was one of the main metals associated to contribute with  a likely contamination, which may be associated with the rainy station and therefore with high turbidity and high concentrations of Zn, Ni, Co, Cr, Fe, Mn and Cu. Additionally, it was possible to infer that the sampled waters collected at the Brejui Mine showed cytotoxic, genotoxic and mutagenic action for the test organism Allium cepa. The point referring to the smaller tailing showed an increase in the indices related to Chromosomal abnormalities. The results of this study warn about the risks that mining waste characterize for the water bodies, mainly by the chemistry complex constitution which they present.
