RESUMO:

The work with selective collection and recycling of materials, for many women, represents a way to obtain income. Although women differ in numerical terms in this activity, the differences developed in the work place gender asymmetries in evidence and issues related to gender and the environment under discussion. This research investigated the women pickers of the Association of Collectors of Recyclable Materials (Ascamar), in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, in order to understand and analyze the gender relations in the association, as well as the articulation between recycling and urban sustainability in the vision of the collectors. Through an ethnographic approach, interviews, participant observation and the writing of field diaries were used as work techniques and Discourse Analysis as a way of interpreting the information collected. It was observed that these collectors make up a group of young women with little schooling, most of them black or brown who seek, in this activity, a means of subsistence. It has been found that in the association, they face sexual division of labor, with principles of separation and hierarchy. And with regard to urban sustainability, it has been shown that recycling contributes significantly to the quality of the city.
