SUMMARY:

Introduction: Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM2) is responsible for disorders in the lower limbs, such as pain, difficulty in wound healing and tingling, generated by a metabolic imbalance caused by insulin resistance. Objective: to verify the association of pain in lower limbs with sociodemographic, clinical-functional and psychocognitive data in elderly people with Diabetes Mellitus type 2. Method: This is a cross-sectional, descriptive, analytical study carried out at the University Hospital Onofre Lopes, in Natal/RN. Elderly aged 60 years or older diagnosed with DM2 participated. The elderly were evaluated from a multidimensional survey, containing sociodemographic, clinical-functional and psychocognitive data, in addition, the following instruments were used: Mini-Mental State Exam (MMSE), Abbreviated Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) and Timed Up and Go Test (TUGT) for screening cognitive impairment and depressive symptoms and mobility analysis, respectively. Results: The sample consisted of 147 elderly people, of whom 53.1% complained of lower limb pain. The complaint of pain in lower limbs was associated with the variables sex, body mass index, Numerical Symptom Scale, GDS, motor TUGT, dual task TUGT, DM diagnosis time, MiniBEST, general health perception, postural hypotension, practice of physical activity, skin sensitivity and falling. Conclusion: The association of lower limb pain with female gender, negative self-perception of health, higher BMI and longer time since DM 2 diagnosis is highlighted.
