BIG AREA: Ciências da Saúde
AREA: Fisioterapia e Terapia Ocupacional
SUMMARY:

Introduction: Stroke causes several motor changes that need to be evaluated. The aim of the study was to perform an analysis of the functional movement of the shoulder and elbow in the activity of drinking water, according to the side of the affected hemibody of stroke patients.

Material and Methods: Participants were 12 stroke patients, 6 with right hemiparesis (HD) and 6 with left hemiparesis (HE) and 12 healthy individuals, 6 who performed the functional activity with the right hand (SD) and 6 with the left hand (SE). A kinematic analysis of the activity of drinking water was performed by the Qualisys System, which included reaching and picking up the glass, bringing it to the mouth, returning to the table and returning the hand to the starting position. Shoulder and elbow angles were calculated along the frames (time fractions). For data analysis, the t`Student test and Pearson's correlation test were used. Results: There was a significant difference between HD and HE in the shoulder angles in frames 9 to 14 (p<0.05), corresponding to the initial phase of reaching the cup, and in frame 91, at the end of returning the cup to the table (p=0.039), with the HE group presenting a lower angle, but there was no difference between the groups in the elbow angles (p>0.05) and in the shoulder angles between SD and SE (p>0.05). There was a significant difference in elbow angles between SD and SE in frames 22 to 31 (p<0.05), with the SD group presenting greater angle in the cup reaching phase. In the correlation analysis, different correlation patterns were observed between the shoulder and elbow angles of HD and HE patients. Discussion: The results showed changes in the range of motion of the shoulder and elbow differently between patients with right and left hemiparesis, which demonstrates impairment of motor control and motor coordination during the phases of the task of drinking water and the need for a functional movement rehabilitation planning. Conclusions: The analysis of functional movement of the upper limb should take into account the motor changes according to the side of the affected hemibody, suggesting the use of task-oriented practice in patients after stroke.
