PAGES: 44
BIG AREA: Ciências da Saúde
AREA: Fisioterapia e Terapia Ocupacional
SUMMARY:
Pain is understood as a multifactorial phenomenon, involving emotional, socio-cultural and environmental aspects. Chronic pain affects approximately 100 million individuals worldwide and 14% are related to the musculoskeletal system. The existence of chronic pain can have consequences on the quality of life of the elderly, and can be associated with factors such as depression, physical and functional disability, social withdrawal, changes in family dynamics, feeling of death and others. All of these associated factors may increase morbidity among the elderly. Objective: To analyze the prevalence of pain and whether there is an impact on functional physical performance in elderly community members. Methodology: Cross-sectional research derived from the multicenter study entitled Internartional Mobility in Aging Study (IMIAS), carried out in the cities of Saint-Hyacinthe (Quebec, Canada), Kingston (Ontario Canada), Manizales (Colombia), Tirana (Albania) and Natal ( Brazil). Data from 1725 elderly people evaluated in the years 2012, 2014 and 2016 were analyzed. For the evaluation, socioeconomic data, health and anthropometric measures were collected. Physical performance was assessed using the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) and the self-report of the presence of pain, back pain and pain in lower limbs (lower limbs), being assessed through a direct question in the interview with each elderly person. The analyzes were performed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21.0. First, descriptive statistics and comparisons using Student's t test. Linear regression models were used to assess associations between physical performance (SPPB scores) and pain, the first model being adjusted for socioeconomic variables and the second model plus health variables. For all stages, we considered p <0.05 and the 95% confidence intervals. Preliminary Results: A prevalence of 71.6% was found in self-reported pain and 28% did not report feeling pain. When comparing the prevalence of pain, pain in the lower limbs showed a higher prevalence in the elderly with 53.3%. Statistical relevance was identified with p <0.001 when comparing physical performance and pain and association of pain and physical performance in the two regression models with p <0.001 and association of physical performance with age and body mass index with p <0.001.
