SUMMARY:

Introduction: Maximum repetition (1RM) testing is recommended to base resistance exercise intensity prescriptions, however it may not be safe to use it in individuals with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACL-R). Thus, the rating of perceived exertion (RPE) is a safer and easier alternative, though its validity and reliability have to be confirmed for this population. Objective: To evaluate the validity and intra-subject reliability of the OMNI RPE scale to control resistance exercise intensity in individuals with ACL reconstruction. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study with 44 individuals with ACL-R. The volunteers will undergo the 7-10RM test in the leg press 45° and resisted knee extension machine exercises to predict the 1RM, which will be performed unilaterally on both limbs after the 13th postoperative week. The following week, subjects will perform a series of 10 repetitions at 30%, 60%, and 80% of 1RM predicted on separate days. Each intensity will be repeated one more time, and the exercises order, limbs and load will be randomized. Participants will be blind to the load they are lifting and immediately after each set will report RPE on the OMNI scale. Correlation tests and, if possible, linear regression to validate the use of the scale in this population will be performed. The intraclass correlation index will be applied to determine the reproducibility of the responses and the mean comparison test will be used to compare the PSE between the limbs. Expected Results: The OMNI scale will be valid and reproducible, allowing its use in clinical practice to control the intensity of resistance exercises in the rehabilitation of patients with ACL-R.
