ÁREA: Fisioterapia e Terapia Ocupacional
RESUMO:

Background: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are alterations in the articular or muscular structures of the masticatory system, which commonly present pain in the muscles of mastication and adjacent regions, joint noises, headaches, earache and jaw deviations. Studies suggest direct associations between TMD and alterations in the cervical spine, with neck pain being one of the main symptoms detected in such dysfunctions, which is mainly related to the decrease in the strength and resistance of the neck muscles. In addition, earache, tinnitus and vertigo are reported as complaints of otological origin commonly present in individuals with TMD. Objective: The aim of this study is to identify and associate cervical changes, neck disability, pain level and quality of life of individuals with temporomandibular dysfunction with and without otological complaints. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study in which individuals of both sexes, aged between 18 and 59 years, with temporomandibular dysfunction will be evaluated and divided into two groups: with and without otological complaints. As otological complaints will be included dizziness, vertigo, tinnitus, earache and hearing loss. The individuals will be submitted to self report evaluation of pain, masticatory and neck muscles pain threshold, head position, neck disability and quality of life, as well as motor control and muscular endurance of deep neck flexors (DNF). All analyzes will be performed by the statistical software SPSS 22.0 for Windows. A 95% confidence interval will be adopted and a p <0.05 as significant difference. Expected Outcomes: It is expected that the group with otological complaints present a higher level of neck pain and masticatory muscles, neck disability, lower motor control and endurance of DNF and worse quality of life.
