RESUMO:

Life expectancy increase has led to an increase in the elderly population in both developed countries and countries in developing. The aging process, characteristic of all multicellular organisms, involve the deterioration of many organic systems, modification of the physical and cognitive disability and capacity culminating in functional dependence. However, studies show that despite the loss characteristics of

this phase of life, the elderly have plastic capacity of the nervous system which, when stimulated, promotes motor learning and performance of functional skills; therefore, some aspects are involved both in relation to the aging process as in motor learning, among these, there is the emotions, which are controversial data regarding the type of emotion that can facilitate the process of motor learning. Among the various alternatives that have been investigated to promote improved cognitive and physical aspects of the elderly, the virtual reality therapy has been highlighted by the ability to simulate real events, making the attractive environment for the patient, and enable immediate feedback, stimulating thus, the solid body subject to adjustment in training. Another aspect highlighted by virtual reality therapy is the possibility of adjusting the training according to the physical and cognitive ability of the subject. In this sense, the present study aims to investigate the influence of a therapy program based on virtual reality in physical ability, cognition and emotional states in elderly with and without cognitive impairment. (Methodology) For this, we will perform a comparative experimental research that will be investigated in two groups composed of subjects aged over 60 who are selected for convenience and form a group with cognitive impairment and another group without cognitive impairment. The subjects of both groups will undergo a therapy program based on virtual reality for 12 weeks, with a frequency of twice a week, for about 60 minutes. The subjects will be evaluated for cognition by the Mini Mental State Examination, Evaluation of physical capacity by Short Physical Performance Battery and electroencephalographic analysis through the Emotiv EPOC, in order to evaluate the eletroencefálica activity related to emotional states of the subjects. The data will be tabulated and analyzed according to their own standards of evaluation of each instrument, and then used the package SPSS-20 data for the particular descriptive analysis and statistical treatment. The descriptive analysis will be performed through the mean and standard deviation. After applying the Shapiro-Wilk test for normality analysis of the sample data for statistical analysis will follow that in the normal case, the multivariate analysis of variance (TWO-WAY ANOVA) will be used in case of non-normal distribution of data , we use the Kruskal-wallis test. (Expected Results) hopefully with the results clarify the influence of a training program based on virtual reality in physical ability, cognition and emotional states in elderly patients with and without cognitive impairment.
