RESUMO:

ABSTRACT

Contextualization: In view of the repercussions caused by stroke, the importance of aerobic training, especially treadmill training, has been emphasized, in improving the functional and cardiovascular variables of the sequelae of the disease. However, few researchers have been done on the best parameters and safety of this type of training, since increments such as anterior inclination may increase cardiovascular demand in this type of approach.

Objective: To evaluate the effects of a treadmill training protocol on the functional and cardiovascular variables of individuals with chronic stroke.

Methods: This is a randomized and blinded clinical trial in progress at the Laboratory of Intervention and Analysis of Movement (UFRN Physiotherapy Department), in which up to the present time participated 18 individuals of both sexes, aged between 20 and 70 years and a sequela of stroke more than 6 months ago. These were randomized into 3 groups: Control Group (CG = 6), submitted to treadmill training without inclination; Experimental Group 1 (EG1), submitted to treadmill training inclined to 5%; and Experimental Group 2 (EG2 = 6), submitted to treadmill training inclined to 10%. The intervention consisted of 3 weekly sessions during a period of 6 weeks. The subjects were evaluated in 3 moments (pre-training, post-training and follow-up) regarding the measures of characterization of the sample, measures of primary outcome (gait velocity in 10m, functional capacity, neuromuscular torque and cardiovascular parameters [systemic pressure- SP, heart rate-HR and peripheral oxygen saturation PSO2]), as well as secondary outcome (quality of life).

In addition, they were monitored during the training sessions regarding the cardiovascular parameters (SP, HR and PSO2), as well as perceived exertion and pain (Borg scale). In the statistical analysis, the Shapiro-Wilk test was used to verify the normality of the data; Additionally, we used the one-way ANOVA to check possible differences in the outcome between groups and one-way ANOVA repeated measures in the intra-group analysis of the outcomes in the three moments evaluated

Preliminary results: Regarding the cardiovascular parameters (HR and SP), none of the groups presented a difference between the means of the three moments evaluated. The intergroup analysis showed that the means of the groups were not different at any time, except those of the SP that differed in the post-training between groups EG1 and EG2 (P = 0.047). Regarding the other outcome measures, the EG2 showed a tendency to increase in all variables in the reassessment, however, there was no statistical significance. On the other hand, the CG presented similar behavior regarding the means of speed and isometric torque. In the bivariate analyzes, it was observed that the general averages of Peak torque and Gait speed showed a tendency to significant correlation in both the evaluation (r = 0.45, P = 0.58) and in the reassessment (r = 0.43; P = 0.07).
