EFFECTS OF AN EXERCISE PROGRAM WITH VIBRATING PLATFORM ON NEUROMUSCULAR PERFORMANCE AND POSTURAL CONTROL OF SEDENTARY OLDER ADULTS: RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL

RESUMO:

Introduction: Age related neuromuscular performance decline negatively affects functionality and contributes to frailty and disability in the elderly. The lack of interest and adherence to strength exercises ends up increasing the deficits in this population. Exercising on vibratory platforms have become a more viable alternative to potentiate the effects of the exercise. However, its benefits are still unclear. Objective: To analyze the effects of an 8-week exercise program on the vibratory platform on neuromuscular and functional lower limb performance, postural control and quality of life of sedentary older adults. Methodology: This is a randomized controlled trial. The sample will be composed of 44 sedentary older adults of both genders, between 65 and 75 years old. All participants will initially be subjected to a dynamometric evaluation, associated to an evaluation of the electromyographic activity of the vastus lateralis muscle, biceps femoris, tibialis anterior and soleus, evaluation of the functional performance of the lower limbs using the Timed up and go test (TUG), postural control through baropodometry and quality of life through the SF-36 questionnaire. After 48 hours all the participants will be randomly assigned to a placebo group (exercise with the platform turned off) or experimental group (exercise with the platform turned on at a frequency of 50 Hz and amplitude of 4 mm). Both groups will join an exercise program on the platform, consisting of 4 sets of 1.5 min long of a static bipodal squat at 40º knee flexion, with a rest interval of 1 minute. After the fourth and eighth weeks of training, the volunteers will be submitted to the new evaluations, with the same procedures of the initial evaluation. For analysis of the normality of the data, the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test will be used and for homogeneity between groups at baseline the one-way ANOVA test will be applied. For intra and intergroup comparisons a two-way ANOVA with repeated measures will be used. In all tests, a significance level of 5% will be adopted. Expected results: It is hoped to clarify the possible effects of exercising on vibratory platforms regarding the neuromuscular performance gains and postural control in the elderly and, thus, to provide a scientific support for health professionals in the elaboration of treatment protocols
