RESUMO:

Among the clinically significant changes that occur during female aging, be noteworthy the hormonal changes, which lead to important changes in body composition, leading to a decrease in lean mass, bone density and also an increase in fat mass, with modifications in the pattern of its distribution. These alterations cause impacts on the musculoskeletal system, with negative effects in functional capacity and health, predisposing women to sarcopenia at earlier ages. Objective: To analyze the relationship between body composition and sarcopenia in middle-aged and elderly women living in the community. Materials and Methods: This is an observational, analytical, cross-sectional and epidemiological study. The population was composed by women aged between 50 and 80 years, living in the municipalities of Parnamirim and Santa Cruz, state of Rio Grande do Norte. Biochemical, body composition and sarcopenia assessments were performed, as well as sociodemographic, socioeconomic and regular physical activity data collection. For the statistical analysis, measures of central tendency and dispersion, Student's t-test, ROC curve, chi-square and logistic regression were used. Results and Discussion: The sample consisted of 88 women, with a mean age of 59.13 (± 7.60) years. Regarding the bivariate analysis, statistically significant differences for sarcopenia were observed only for waist-height ratio (RCA), body adiposity index (BAI) and lipid accumulation product (LAP). The calculated cut-off for LAP was able to identify sarcopenia (Sensitivity = 0.714, Specificity = 0.453, p value = 0.01) and this index was the only one considered risk factor for the development of sarcopenia (OR = 1.01, 95% CI 1.01-1.02). Conclusions: Changes in body composition during the aging process are related to sarcopenia in middle-aged and elderly women. Moreover, it was possible to conclude that only LAP remained associated after all performed tests, evidencing that augmentations in LAP increase the chance of developing sarcopenia. The results presented are clinical relevance, since the best understanding of this theme is fundamental to provide scientific subsidies for the planning of health care in the area of Geriatrics, Women's Health and Physiotherapy.
