RESUMO:

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM2) affects about 15 to 20% of Brazilian elderly. Among the most frequent consequences of the disease is the imbalance with the occurrence of falls, which may be due to diabetic peripheral neuropathy, loss of strength and sensitivity of lower limbs, low vision, polypharmacy, dizziness, auditory deficit, among other factors. Balance training is an important clinical management tool for these elderly patients and conventional kinesiotherapy is reported in the literature as the gold standard for this treatment. With the advancement of technology, virtual reality has become a balancing training option through Wii Fit Plus games with specific tasks. Objective: To investigate the influence of a non-immersive virtual reality protocol on the balance of the elderly with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Methodology: This is a randomized, controlled, controlled trial. Will include individuals aged 65 to 79 years; clinical diagnosis of type 2 diabetes mellitus; have a complaint of altered body balance; risk of falls by the Dynamic Gait Index; have a diagnosis time of DM2 equal to or greater than 6 years; do not have a cognitive deficit according to schooling; have mild or moderate peripheral neuropathy assessed by the Neuropathic Symptom Score; have good visual acuity assessed by the Snellen Table; are not performing some type of body balance rehabilitation or performed it up to six months prior to the research. These elderly patients will be divided into the Control Group (CG) who will perform a conventional kinesiotherapy protocol with a focus on balance and with sensorimotor demand similar to the exercises of virtual reality or in the Experimental Group (EG) that will perform a virtual reality protocol based on balance increased by conventional GC kinesiotherapy. ANOVA of repeated measures 2x2 will be performed considering as intergroup factor, the intervention and control groups; and the intragroup, the two evaluations to be performed. Expected results: it is hoped to find out if the virtual reality protocol has a beneficial effect for the rehabilitation of the body balance in diabetic elderly so that there is a direction of the most appropriate therapy for these individuals.
