RESUMO:

Background: The women reproductive history and age of the first child, together with the effects of menopause, have contributed to the physical alterations that appear with the aging, as the early alterations in women functional capacity. Thus, several factors can influence respiratory muscle strength. Objective: To assess associations of respiratory muscle strength with variables of reproductive history in middle-aged women and elderly women living in the community. Methods: Women aged 40-80 years old residents in the community of Santa Cruz – RN – Brazil composed the sample. They were recruited by advertisements in primary care neighborhood centers and through a hospital contact list. A questionnaire with socioeconomic characteristics was applied, maximal respiratory pressures (MRP) were measured and anthropometric measures were taken. Multiple linear regression analysis were performed to model the effect of multiparity on MRP, adjusting for covariates (age at first birth, income, education, smoking, BMI, time seated and walking). Results: Approximately 44.1% of the sample had 3 children or less, 30.4% had 4-6 children and 25.5% had more than 7 children. There was a significant difference considering parity and the two age categories (41-60 versus 61-80 years old). MIP values were different when considering schooling, smoking, sitting time per day and parity. When considering MEP values, there were differences in schooling and parity. As for MIP, those who gave birth to three or fewer children had more than 20 cmH2O than those who had had seven or more children. Considering MEP, the difference between educational groups was of 12 cmH2O when comparing those who gave birth to three or fewer children with those who had had seven or more children. Conclusion: This study provides evidence that multiparity influences respiratory muscle strength, since women with higher numbers of children have lower values of maximal respiratory pressures. This study also concludes that other variables, such as BMI and the time spent in a sedentary lifestyle during the day, are related to the capacity to generate respiratory pressures.
