SLEEP HYGIENE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR SLEEP QUALITY PROMOTION IN HEART DISEASE: A RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL

RESUMO:

INTRODUCTION: Evaluate sleep in heart disease has been conducted by international entities related to sleep because of the high relevance of quality of life, functionality and health status. Guidance about hygiene sleep recommendations is one of the low cost and easy to apply strategies for improving sleep health, also is current public health policies key points. OBJECTIVES: Evaluate the effectiveness of structured primer use as guideline on sleep hygiene to promote sleep quality in patients with heart disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a randomized clinical trial. The patients were randomly divided into two groups: one control group (GC) received general and verbal guidelines on healthy living habits, and another group (GI) received a structured primer with recommendations on sleep hygiene according to American Thoracic Society (ATS). Patients with a previous diagnosis of heart disease, at the HUOL-UFRN cardiology clinic, were evaluated for socio-demographic, anthropometric and clinical data and sleep quality (PSQI-BR), daytime sleepiness (ESS-BR), insomnia severity (IGI), and risk for developing obstructive sleep apnea (QB). Data analysis were performed by SPSS software version 20.0 for Windows, using a significance of 5% for the studied variables. Descriptive statistics were performed by means of distribution measures. PRELIMINARY RESULTS: The result presented is a partial analysis of the study about 16 patients, 9 women and 7 men, with heart disease in May 2017, with a mean age of 60.06 ± 11.15 years. It was observed that the subjects studied slept on average 410 minutes per night and, however, about 57% of these had poor sleep quality or had a chance of having some sleep disorder. In an analysis between the groups studied, there were no significant differences in sleep quality, excessive daytime sleepiness and insomnia severity.
